What is the best turf to buy?
There is no one ‘best' turf – the best turf is the turf that best suits your situation and requirements

Should I use see or lay turf when establishing my lawn?
Purchasing rolls/slabs of turf will be more expensive initially but seeding will be the most expensive in the long run when you consider your time – seeds, once sprouted, will need to be watered several times per day, much time will be spent on eradicating sprouting weed seeds, rain can wash the soil (and seed) away and birds could enjoy eating the lawn seeds.

What is the measurement of a roll of turf? How much does it weigh?
Each turf farm cuts turf rolls/slabs in different sizes. Clifton Park Turf Supplies cuts rolls which are half a square metre. The approximate weight is 10 kg per roll. Approximately 35-40 sq m of each turf variety will fit into a normal sized (6x4) box trailer.

How much soil and mat are there on each roll of turf?
This will vary according to the turf type. Turf is harvested with approximately 1 cm of soil (because of the loose mat with Sweet Smother some of this falls off) and 2 to 3 cm of grass mat.

Is there a minimum order?
No. Customers may purchase or pick-up any amount they require.

How much is cartage?
Cartage will depend on the quantity of the turf order and the suburb being delivered to. If a small amount of turf is required for delivery, Clifton Park Turf Supplies will endeavour to join several small deliveries in the one area on the same truckload so that cartage can be kept to a minimum. No turf farm can deliver turf free. Trucks are expensive to operate – consider the quality of the turf for the delivered price.

Do you lay turf?
No, but we do provide referrals to reputable landscapers or turf layers who would be happy to lay your turf for you.

How long will turf last before it is laid?
We recommend that on hot summer days, turf should be laid the day it is cut or the following morning. It must be laid quickly on cool soil, and watered immediately. If the turf does develop some yellowing before it is laid, this will grow out over a period of time.

Can you install turf in the winter months?
Yes, turf can be laid during the winter months. It will take longer to establish (up to a month in the very cold months) but watering is not as critical as in the summer months. In the hottest months, turf will establish within a week to ten days. During this period the turf should be kept constantly moist to ensure survival and optimum establishment.

Broad-leafed carpet grass normally infests couch lawns where there is insufficient sun for the couch to grow thick and lush. Perhaps trees have grown bigger throwing more shade. It would be wise to consider a more shade tolerant turf such as our Sweet Smother or Palmetto.

What turf can I grow in shady areas?
Couches are not shade tolerant. This includes Queensland Blue couch, Aussiblue, Greenlees Park , Legend, Santa Anna, Wintergreen, CT2 and any of the other green couch varieties. Couches need a minimum of 6 to 7 hours of direct sunlight per day or lightly filtered sunlight for most of the day.

Sweet Smother is the most shade tolerant turf grown in south east Queensland required 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight per day. Palmetto, which is a soft-leaf buffalo truf variety, requires 3 to 4 hours of sunlight per day as do all soft-leaf buffalo turf varieties.

Is there a best time for watering turf?
Early morning is probably the best time because usually there is less wind to distort sprinkler patterns and the cooler temperatures provide for less evaporation. Night watering, especially in the winter months, may promote disease development.

My lawn seems to be thinning out. I first noticed it after it was last mown.
These symptoms usually indicate a lawn grub problem. Lawn grubs eat the green leaf of your lawn. Test immediately by placing a wet, dense piece of cloth (old piece of carpet, old beach towel, hessian bag) on a green section of your lawn at night. Lift up the cloth/carpet when you wake up in the morning. If your lawn is infested the lawn grubs will be under this material. Treat immediately. An application of a high nitrogenous fertiliser will help your lawn to green up again quickly.

Is your turf lawn grub free?
No turf farm can say they are supplying turf that does not have the potential to harbour lawn grubs. Sprays do not kill the egg stage of the lawn grub cycle. A sprayed lawn today could have eggs hatching tomorrow. Moths fly around the neighbourhood and lay their eggs in lawns, gardens and surrounds. During the lawn grub season (late spring to late autumn) it is wise to regularly check for lawn grub infestation. Do not spray before checking as this would be a waste of money and not beneficial to the environment. We recommend that a check for lawn grubs be made within a week of laying turf and treated if necessary.

My lawn is turning a blue/grey colour and the leaves are folding up
This indicates moisture stress - thoroughly water immediately

Isn't lawn high maintenance?
A lawn can take up a lot of your valuable time. However, if you buy a weed-free lawn, prepare your site correctly, purchase the most suitable variety of lawn, install an irrigation system (and perhaps water saving crystals) you can sit back and relax!!!

There are many new turf varieties on the market which promise the world in maintenance – much of this information is false and misleading – the turf variety that requires the least maintenance (mowing wise) and which grows naturally in south east Queensland is the great performer Queensland Blue couch – a mow once a week in summer and monthly in winter is adequate; go away for holidays and mow on your return and it looks great unlike many other turf varieties. Palmetto requires at least one third less mowing than most other soft-leaf buffalo turf varieties sold in south east Queensland.

Are lawns high water users?
Once established, lawns are not high water users. This is a misconception. If dry times are experienced, most lawns will survive on natural rainfall.
