Queensland Blue Couch ( Digitaria didactyla ) characterised by a blue/green hue and softness is undoubtedly one of the most suitable and attractive turf varieties for home lawns in south east Queensland . It grows naturally throughout this region indicating the suitability of this turf to our climate. After years and years of drought, where Queensland Blue Couch has only received natural rainfall, it has greened up again very quickly after rain. It is a very resilient turf variety and is one of the turf varieties with the lowest maintenance – a lawn variety which is underestimated. Queensland Blue Couch only requires a mow once every week in summer and every 4 to 6 weeks in winter. When you take a holiday and mow on your return, your Queensland Blue Couch will look great!!

One of the main advantages of Queensland Blue couch over the green couches is its immaculate appearance. It does not suffer from thatching (build up of a dead layer) as much as green couch varieties, which means that when the lawn is mowed the ‘strawy' appearance so prevalent with green couches does not occur.

Queensland Blue Couch is not as hard-wearing as the green couch varieties or Aussiblue but is hardy enough for normal use in home lawns.

As with all couch varieties, 6 to 7 hours of sunlight is necessary for this turf variety to perform to its optimum.

Queensland Blue Couch seed is commercially available. However, 100% purity cannot be guaranteed and a good lawn from seeding requires patience and considerable effort in weed control over a long period.

Queensland Blue Couch is a fantastic turf variety. Unfortunately, because this variety does not grow on turf farms as fast as green couch varieties, it is not as lucrative to a turf farm as green couch varieties are. Remember, the faster a turf variety grows, the more maintenance there is for the home gardener!! Queensland Blue Couch is perhaps the lowest maintenance turf variety on the market.

  • Less maintenance than green couch and some zoysia varieties

Aussiblue swazi ( Digitaria didactyla syn D. swazilandensis ) is a fine-leaf turf variety similar to Queensland Blue Couch, being of the same family. This means that it also is soft to the touch and does not take on the ‘strawy' appearance after mowing that green couches do.
If unfertilised, Aussiblue has a lighter green colour than Queensland Blue couch but does take on the bluish hue after fertilisation. It grows more quickly than Queensland Blue Couch making it a hardier turf and it is more resistant to fungal diseases than Queensland Blue Couch. Because Aussiblue grows more quickly than Queensland Blue Couch, it does require more maintenance but does not require as much mowing as green couches do.
Another factor where Aussiblue is coming to the fore is weed suppression. Weeds find it difficult to infest this lawn. Aussiblue is grown in New South Wales to suppress Giant's Ratstail Grass.
Aussiblue is proving extremely popular with households which want a hardy yet great looking lawn with excellent wear properties. Schools and councils are finding this turf variety an excellent alternative to the green couches for their ovals, parks and surrounds.
Aussiblue is very drought tolerant.  The Redlands Research Centre in their research have found that Aussiblue needs the lowest nutrient input of any turf variety trialled to stay looking good!!

Why purchase Aussiblue –
  • Immaculate appearance because of the same family as Queensland Blue Couch
  • When a hardy lawn is needed but without the high maintenance or ‘strawy' appearance of green couch varieties
  • Softer to the touch than most other turf varieties
  • When a lawn is needed to suppress weed invasion

Palmetto (Stenotaphum secundatum) is a St Augustine (soft-leaf buffalo) turf variety from the Carolinas in USA . It demonstrates superior shade, cold, frost, heat and drought tolerance when compared to other soft-leaf buffalo turf varieties. It performs excellently in sun or semi-shade (3 to 4 hours approx) and is ideal in maturing landscapes.
Were you aware that Buffalo received its name from the ship call the ‘ Buffalo ' which carried the first buffalo turf variety to Australia . These first varieties have thrived in Australia – now we have the improved variety named Palmetto. Palmetto has become the BIGGEST SELLING PROPRIETARY SOFT-LEAF BUFFALO turf in the WORLD .
Palmetto, and indeed all soft-leaf buffalo turf varieties, are more hard-wearing than Sweet Smother but not as soft to the touch, or as shade tolerant. Soft-leaf buffalo turf varieties are also more prone to fungal diseases than Sweet Smother.

It is important that sprays containing Dicamba are not sprayed on soft-leaf buffalo lawns.

For more information visit www.palmetto.com.au
Why is Palmetto far superior to major competitor
soft-leaf buffalo turf varieties sold in south-east Queensland?
  • Palmetto has a green, rather than a purple stem
  • Palmetto has the deepest green colour, even after successive frosts
  • Palmetto is softer to the touch
  • Palmetto is less coarse looking (therefore more attractive)
  • Palmetto requires at least 1/3 less mowing (great saving of time)
  • Palmetto is more drought resistant (once established) due to its dense root system

Sweet Smother (Dactyloctenium australe), sometimes know as Durban, is an excellent shade lawn – it is the most shade tolerant of all turf varieties sold in south-east Queensland . Sweet Smother needs a minimum of approximately 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight per day or filtered sunlight for a longer period.
Sweet Smother is soft in texture. It is lime green in colour in full sun but the colour darkens when Sweet Smother is grown in shade or when fertilised. It will withstand average wear – suitable for normal home lawns. However, it will not handle constant heavy traffic, especially in the winter months when the lawn is growing slowly. If you require a lawn to cater for high wear, consider Palmetto.
Sweet Smother does not perform well in a poorly drained situation. Roots need to dry out between water applications. A depth of 10 cm (and ideally 15 cm) of a free-draining soil is necessary for the roots of Sweet Smother to fully develop allowing it to perform to its optimum.
Herbicides that can be applied to Queensland Blue Couch can be applied to Sweet Smother without detriment.
Reasons for laying a Sweet Smother lawn –
  • The most shade tolerant turf available
  • Softer to the touch than other turf varieties for shady areas
  • Less prone to fungal diseases that soft-leaf buffalo turf varieties suffer from
Research from the Redlands Research Centre at Centre states that Sweet Smother is one of the most shade tolerant turf varieties on the market.  The other turf with a very high shade tolerance is Zoysia Matrella.
